W hat Does It Mean to Allocate a Disk Drive?
Disk drive allocation involves creating and formatting a partition on unallocated space. When you install a new HDD or SSD, Windows often shows the space as Unallocated. Until it's formatted and assigned a drive letter (like D or E), the space is unusable.
Step-by-Step: How to Allocate Disk Space
To assign unallocated space or a new drive in Windows 11:
- Press Windows + X and select Disk Management.
- Look for the drive marked Unallocated.
- Right-click on it and choose New Simple Volume.
- The wizard opens → assign a drive letter (D, E, etc.).
